16/08/2010 - Coldrenick social event – 16th August 2010

The sun blazed and members tackled a score event with thirty controls spread across the farm. Nobody managed to get to all thirty although Mark Lockett found 27 but incurred some time penalties. Most controls dibbed within the allowed sixty minutes was 22 by Gavin Henderson.
Despite careful synchronisation of the control boxes by Barry Olds we had some significant timing problems. There seems to be some mysterious interaction between the memory of the portable reader/printer and the dibbers/boxes which intermittently causes recorded times to jump forward by 6 or 12 hours or sometimes other amounts – or not! Not a problem for a social event but something we need to sort out before we get started on Night-O.  I used a couple of new control sites, both related to pumping water. In Lamb Park Wood (the one with the concealed pond) we visited the old Ram house which still contains the Victorian water pump used to drive water into the reservoir supplying the big house at Coldrenick. Down by the viaduct at the bottom of the farm we saw the pipe carrying water into a leat supplying another Ram, this one pushing water up to the quarry works. Search Wikipedia for ‘Hydraulic Ram’ to see how these ingenious pumps ran, powered only by a slow flow of water though a leat from a nearby stream.  Afterwards we enjoyed a barbeque and swimming. Pretty hard to beat Cornwall in august when the weather cooperates!

10/08/2010 - Friday Run 13th August

After last week’s successful use of a train to get to the beginning of our run, we are going to do the same this week, on a different route.

Meet at Bodmin Parkway Railway Station (pay and display parking) at SX110641 in good time to catch the 18.32 train to Lostwithiel.

Bring some change to buy your ticket at the station before departure.  We will then run back from Lostwithiel, along the Fowey River valley to the Lanhydrock Estate.  Here the different route options diverge giving lengths ranging from 6km (no climb) up to 10km (with climb).  We will eat in Lostwithiel afterwards.

Please reply to this message using the contacts page if you want to join in, telling me:

How far you want to walk or run and if you want to eat

 See you on Friday.

10/08/2010 - Coldrenick Informal 15th August

This is a social event with orienteering and a BBQ held at Coldrenick, near Menheniot.  The orienteering will be a score event plus a couple of short courses as an alternative.  Aim to get started by 11am or possibly slightly earlier.

We will have a BBQ lunch and there is swimming available as well.  The BBQ is provided but you need to bring your own stuff to put onto it.  By getting going with the orienteering reasonably early we can all enjoy the BBQ lunch together.

Please note this is a no dogs event due to there being calves in some of the fields.

Any queries to Rob Sneyd 07870 271531.

09/08/2010 - Friday Run 13th August

See you on Friday.

03/08/2010 - Friday Run 6th August

By popular demand we will leave the second half of the Minerals Tramway until the regulars are back, so this Friday we will revisit an old favourite which we have not done for several years.

Meet at Par Railway Station (free parking) at SX077542 in good time to catch the 18.29 train to Luxulyan.  Bring some change to buy your ticket on the train.  We will then run back from Luxulyan, over the famous Treffry Viaduct, along another old tramway through the beautiful Luxulyan Valley, before dropping down the inclined plane to Ponts Mill.  From here there are 4 options back to Par Station giving total lengths of 6.5, 7, 8 and 10km.  We will eat in the Royal Inn, opposite the station.

Please reply to this message if you want to join us, telling Graham:
    * How far you want to walk/run
    * If you want to eat

See you on Friday.

16/07/2010 - Date Change for Cradock Moor FL

Please note that FL7 held at Cradock Moor is being held on Saturday 18th September not as previously advertised on the Sunday.

Updated fixtures can be found here.

13/07/2010 - Friday Run 16th July

Devoran to Portreath Minerals Tramway - Part 1

Have crossed Cornwall one way (The Saints’ Way), we are now going to recross it further west.  The Minerals Tramway is an almost level, smooth surfaces route, which will take us 2 weeks.  Options this week for running/walking are 4km, 6km or 9km.  Cycling is another options available on this route.

Meet at the Fox and Hounds pub car park in Scorrier, just off the A30, (SW723444) ready to set off at 18.30.  Please let Graham know:
   1. If you are coming and which length you want to do, (or if you want to cycle).
   2. Whether you want to eat afterwards.

See you on Friday.

01/07/2010 - Friday Run 2nd July

The last leg along the Saint’s Way is not all downhill, as last week’s leg to Milltown brought us down to almost sea level and the journey on is not flat!  Nonetheless it will be worth the effort as the scenery is superb.

Options this week are 9km from Milltown, or 5km from Golant, to Fowey.  We will go to a restaurant in Fowey to eat afterwards.

Please reply to Graham via the training option on the contact form to tell him:
   1. If you are coming and which length you want to do.
   2. Whether you want to eat afterwards.

Meet at the Caffa Mill (Bodinnick Ferry) car park in Fowey (SX126522) ready to set off at 18.30.  Bring change for the car park, as it is pay and display.

See you on Friday.

01/07/2010 - Sam Giles - Lands End to John O Groats

Sam Giles (of Sarum OC and SWJS) is riding solo from Lands End to John O Groats starting on Mon 26th July and aiming to finish on Saturday 7th August, a mere 13 days later.  He will be averaging 80 miles a day.  He would be most grateful if members of SW orienteering clubs felt able to sponser him.  His route will take him through Cornwall on his way up north.  If anybody would like to sponser him or perhaps come out in support, please get in touch.

23/06/2010 - Trelissick Results Added

Last Sunday saw Trelissick host Forest League 5 and all those that ventured to the National Trust estate enjoyed some glorious weather, swealtering temperatures, fantastic views and challenging orienteering.  Gavin Henderson's courses made the most of the area, dominated by parkland and steep slopes, and heres hoping you all had a good run.  Thanks must also go to Roger Venn for controlling and Ian Harvey for organising.

Results can be found here.

The next event will be Forest League 6 at Idless Woods.

18/06/2010 - Friday Run 25th June

Our last leg along the Saint’s Way was quite a tough one, as we climbed to the high point of Helman Tor.  The next one looks significantly easier, as we descend from 209m to 10m.  I am not saying that every step is downhill, but they are definitely in the majority!

Options this week are 7km from Helman Tor to Milltown or 4km from Lanlivery to Milltown.  We go into Lostwithiel to eat afterwards.

Please reply to Graham to tell him:
   1. If you are coming and which length you want to do.
   2. Whether you want to eat afterwards.

Meet on the south side of the railway bridge on the minor road from Lostwithiel to Golant at SX104576 ready to set off at 18.30.  There is space for us to park at this point.
See you on Friday.

07/06/2010 - Friday Run 11th June

The Saint’s Way is turning out to be a very pleasant and straightforward route to follow and is enabling us to see new parts of Cornwall that we would not normally visit.  A good example is the peaceful little village of Withiel where we finished our run last week.  Having reached the highest point at St Breock, where we ceremoniously touched the longstone, this week we move on to the second high point, just a few metres lower, at Helman Tor.

Options this week are 9km from Withiel to Helman Tor or 5km from Withiel to Lanivet.  We will move on to the Crown Inn at Lanlivery afterwards.

Please contact Graham (via the training option on the contact form) to tell him:
   1. If you are coming and which length you want to do.
   2. Whether you want to eat at the pub afterwards.

Meet at the car park below Helman Tor (SX062614) ready to set off at 18.30, (the early time is because the narrow roads in the area will slow things down).  Allow plenty of time to get there.

The second part of the 9km run, from Lanivet to Helman Tor is on minor roads, so bright clothing and trainers are recommended.

See you on Friday.

01/06/2010 - Friday Run 4th June

Whether inspired or depressed by your performance at the Tamar Triple, your next chance to get a bit fitter is this Friday, when we tackle the next stage of the Saints’ Way.

Options this week are 9km from St Jidgey to Withiel or 5km from St Breock to Withiel.  We will move on to the Victoria Inn at Roche afterwards.

Please reply to Graham to tell him if you are coming and which length you want to do and whether you want to eat at the pub afterwards.

Meet at the church in Withiel (SW994654) ready to set off at 18.30 (the earlier time is because the narrow roads in the area will slow things down).  Allow plenty of time to get there.

Parking in Withiel is restricted, but there are some places down the hill through the village from the church.  Please park with consideration for residents.  Please share if possible; you could make your own arrangement to meet a friend at the Victoria in Roche, (by the old A30), and leave one car there.

Contact Graham via the contact form using the 'Training' option.

21/05/2010 - Friday Run 21st May

Over the last three years we have run around Cornwall (well most of it), so now we need a new challenge.  We are going to run across Cornwall!

The Saints’ Way runs from Padstow to Fowey via some high points along the way.  It’s too far to go in one evening, so we are going to split it up a bit.

Meet this Friday at the main quayside car park in Padstow at SW920752, ready to start promptly at 7pm.  It’s a pay and display, so bring some change.

Lengths are 4km or 8km long; take your choice.  We will go to a local pub to eat afterwards. Please let Graham know if you are coming so that the pub can be booked.

See you there.

21/05/2010 - Photos

The website is constantly under development.  A new feature has been the addition of a link to Flikr - a photo hosting site.

The first batch is a set of photos taken on the Friday urban O run around Truro on James Hargreaves "new" O-map.  Participants could choose from a score or a multi-loop course.  Options were 3km, 5km or the full 8km.  That is of course the OCAD calculation of distance - Shane recorded almost 12km on his completion of the longest course.  Other runners to complete the full distance were Graham and Will.   Barry and Arthur looked shattered after only 5km!

21/05/2010 - Stithians Run

The Stithians run around the lake is Kerno's biannual test of running fitness.  It has been happening regularly since the Autumn of 2002 whatever the weather.  The distance was thought to be 5 miles or 8km - GPS technology now confirms the distance as 7.79km!

The latest run on the 7th May was a good evening for the run with 12 hardy souls running or walking the route.  The idea is that of a handicap time trial - staggered starts so that in an ideal world there is a mass finish.

Past runnings of the test have shown some speed with times close to the 30 minute mark.  Several people have got close - Martin Ackerley has been closest most often but John Allen has been close too.  The two Hargreaves brothers James and Ian have been close as well.

However this running saw the breaking of the 30 minute barrier by Shane Ohly.  On only his first attempt at running the all terrain route unseen he managed 29:42 - wow!

Next running - autumn 2010 - will you be there?

10/04/2010 - Eden Urban Race

A few words from the organisers of the event.

Firstly, an apology; a few people commented on one or two map anomalies that should have been corrected before the event – they’ll be sorted although the outcome maybe academic.

Secondly, the good stuff; a superb day for all of us and a unique opportunity to run in this particular location with a quality field representing all ages of British Orienteering.  And apart from those super-fast runners going quicker than expected on Oak most courses were won in 30 minutes which was the aim of the planner.  Thanks for coming and making this a successful event.  Elsie and I would also like to thank our friends and club members for turning out to support the event.

Lastly, the not so good stuff.  There were many conditions placed on KERNO to allow this event to coincide with the week following the JK.  Two were safety related – a complete ban on anyone entering the land train route and walking was mandatory on the time out leg on the long courses.  From a high observation point it was seen that several competitors breached those conditions.

Then, in a horticultural environment such as Eden it is unthinkable that runners should cut corners and run across the planted beds – apart from gaining an illicit time advantage by going out of bounds those runners totally compromised ever returning to Eden.  I was with the site manager when several instances were seen.

Next, competitors were asked to take care of themselves, other runners and visitors to the Project.  There are now written reports on file of runners barging visitors and staff.  Unbelievable!

So what is in store for the future for orienteering at Eden?  We don’t know yet but a meeting with management is scheduled soon when all Eden reports have been collated.  It was noted, however, that the vast majority of competitors were well behaved and the pit area was alive with movement and a feel good factor was created by the, mostly athletic, activity.  Up to now KERNO’s orienteering based activity at Eden has been with the blessing of the site – with some further tweaks we may be able to return

09/04/2010 - Eden Results

Eden results have now been posted and are available here.

Please note there are a few issues with how the run-in splits are displayed - this is due to the fact that the code that beautifies the results files is not robust enough to deal with the untimed leg.  This problem is currently being actively corrected.

Good luck to them.

Entries for the JK are still open until the 12th March.

08/03/2010 - Dinner Dance

The annual Awards evening and Dinner Dance was held last Saturday evening at Lanhydrock Hotel and was a magnificent success.  A modest gathering of old and new members got together for an excellent meal, short speeches and dancing.

Steve Beech hosted the awards and Pauline Olds master-minded the whole evening. Music by Jailhouse proved very popular with the dance floor rarely empty.  Jock Turnham impressed everyone with his freeform  and innovative moves.

The usual colour and age class awards were distributed.  Winner of the Brown was Gavin Henderson, Blue Barry Olds, Green Rod Allday, Light Green Andy Barclay, Orange Victoria Smith and Yellow Erryn Lockett.  The Junior Trophy was awarded to Victoria Smith, the Mosely Trophy to James Hargreaves and the KERNO Salver to Roger Hargreaves.

Awards not given at the evening will be presented at the earliest opportunity at forthcomimg events.

07/03/2010 - Tywardreath Trotter

DATE CHANGE!!

KERNO members may be interested in taking part in this Race.  The Trotter is now in its fifth year, and was a great success again last year, with over 300 runners taking part. A few KERNO runners took part too.

The race starts and finishes in Tywardreath (between St Austell and Fowey) on Saturday 24th July 2010. There is a 1-mile fun run at 5.30pm. The main 7-mile race starts at 6.30pm. Both races are approximately half off-road.

Their website has all the information that you will need, including entry forms, course map, course profile and description, previous results and photos, etc and is at www.tywardreathtrotter.co.uk. Use the online entry form.

The race is run under England Athletics permit, is well marshalled and refreshments are available. All money raised goes to local charities.

Good running.

15/02/2010 - Lanhydrock Results Added

A fantastic turnout enjoyed a glorious day's orienteering at Lanhydrock at the weekend.  Well over 100 competitors battled it out over some excellent courses, which, with their tricky final sections, demanded full concentration right to the finish line.  Thanks go to Graham for planning, Steve for controlling and Annabel for organising.

The results can be found here.

04/02/2010 - Fixtures 2010

The 2010 fixture list has been finalised and can be found here.

This year's forest league will be fought out over 10 rounds; from the season opener at Polly Joke on the 31st January to the exciting finale at Tehidy on 12th December.  It is bound to be a great year's racing.

Also this year sees two major events being held in our region.  Firstly the JK, Britain's premier orienteering weekend, will be held in the South West over the Easter weekend (2nd-5th April).  The JK is always a fantastic event and for those that have never been it is highly recommended.  Details can be found at the event website here.

As well being heavily involved in organising the JK, KERNO is also hosting this year's Tamar Triple, which is being held on Penhale over three days from 29th-31st May.  Penhale is one of Britain's best areas and on a fine day there are few better places to go orienteering.

Happy orienteering in 2010.

04/02/2010 - New Website Launched

After many hours, much head scratching and an uncountable number of coffees, the new Kerno website has finally been launched.

This is the new home for all the Kerno's news, fixture information, results and much more.  We very much hope you enjoy it and find what you need.

Most of all this is your website, so feel free to make your views known, make an enquiry or even hurl constructive abuse via the contact page.  Here you can get in touch with members of the committee as well as the web administrator.

There is also a site news section which will provide information on the progress of the continued development of the site, including feature updates, bug fixes and much more.  If you have any ideas or views on the design or content of the site please contact the web administrator, who will do their best to satisfy, appease or fob off.
