Event & League Structure
Forest League (Sept – May)
The Forest League is Cornwall OC's long established competition, consisting of monthly events running across the "winter" months. The events are usually held on Sunday with start times between 1100 and 1330. All events feature a wide range of colour coded courses meaning that there is something suitable for all ages and abilities.
These events are open to all but only club members are eligible to score points in the league system. At each event club members run their chosen course and receive points based on the following formula:
Runner's points = Winner's time ÷ Runner's time × 100
The best four scores from, usually, seven events count in the final league standings. Trophies are awarded annually for the winner of each colour coded course.
Summer Series (May-Sept)
An exciting series of novel events especially suited to newcomers, whilst offering something different to the established orienteer! The Series runs fortnightly across summer months. These events generally take place on Saturday afternoons between 1630 and 1830. Friendly advice and coaching available for beginners of all ages. All events feature a social side with a BBQ or pub gathering after.
Exact course formats will vary from event to event. There will always be something suitable for absolute beginners of all ages (EASY), improvers (INTERMEDIATE) and experts (HARD). As the season progresses you can hone your skills and be challenging for victory on the experts' course! There will be an age handicapped league system running through the Series. Prizes for the winners of each course!
Night Events (Nov-Feb)
Night events usually take place on Saturday evenings with starts between 1800 and 1900. These events take place alongside the Forest League between November and February. Each winter KERNO organises three events in the eastern half of the county as part of the Devon and Cornwall Night League.
Three colour coded courses are offered; Green, Jade (Short Green) and Orange. A similar scoring system is used to determine the league winners who receive a trophy. It is advisable to try orienteering in the day first before tackling these! In addition the club organises a further three fun, novelty events in the west. Formats of these vary and are more suited to night orienteering novices.
Tamar League (Sept – May)
The Forest League is Cornwall OC's long established competition, but as long ago as 2005 the then current chairman Phil Newall thought it would be a good idea to encourage club members from both sides of the Tamar to take part in a combined league - the Tamar League.
The idea is that to be eligible in the final "rankings" you have to compete in at least three of the other clubs events. That means that KERNO members have to go to DEVON events. One of the side effects of that is that you get to visit fresh terrain and experience more that Cornwall can offer - hard to believe I know but it's true!.
And the photo shows DEVON's Roger Hateley [and KERNO contact member] being presented with the Green Trophy for 2010 - 2011 [a little late!!] at Polly Joke in February 2012. Phil Newall, creator of the League, is on the left, Roger centre and current Chairman, Steve Beech, right.
