Southern Champs '13

Hayle Towans & St Ives

13th April - Saturday afternoon

Final details can be downloaded here.

A warm up event on an interesting area called Hayle Towans: it is a complex fixed-dune system which some think is even more challenging than Penhale. You might remember it as the warm up area for JK 1997 - we'll use a new map however updated Winter 2013. It's a small area and will be a splendid prologue to the Championships. Start times from 1300 to 1700 for two courses or design your own course from the all sites map. Charges £5 Seniors and £2 Juniors. No timing involved. Bamboo canes and pin punches will let some of the family reflect on the "old days".

Travel Directions

Take the A30 westwards to the roundabout to the east of Hayle at SW575385. Take to secondary road towards Hayle, pass Lidl and turn right at the next mini-roundabouts - follow local signage to event parking (Pay and Display)

A brand new area and a brand new map! The Cornish Town of St Ives.

Wikipedia tells us: St Ives (Porth Ia, meaning St Ia's cove) is a seaside town, civil parish and port. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis and the town is now primarily a popular holiday resort, notably achieving the award 'Best UK Seaside Town' from the British Travel Awards in both 2010 and 2011. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. For local information for visitors, holiday makers and local residents, St Ives Town Council opened the St Ives Visitor & Information Centre in June 2011. See this link.

For the event itself there will be seven courses based on the BOF Guidelines. We are pleased to announce that we can offer junior courses as well as senior courses for the Urban race at St Ives. Courses will be designed such that, through carefully placed control sites, they are suitable for junior competitors. Therefore the whole family can enjoy Orienteering in one of the most beautiful towns in the country.

There will be a remote start for the junior courses to allow courses that will avoid the main traffic flows. A map will be available to direct competitors to this start. We intend to offer an escort service from the main car park to the remote start.

The event is also a round of the Southern England Urban Orienteering League (SEUOL).
